I am a rising fourth year psychology and business management student from Vancouver. As an adult in dire need of life experience, I figured I would join the UBC Arts Co-op Program and turn my passion in both psychology and management into a career. I currently work as a Screening Associate at Blue Umbrella Ltd., a global risk management company specializing in due diligence services, regulatory technology and background screening solutions based in Hong Kong. Working under the Pre-Employment Screening Department, I mainly perform employment screening on prospective employees for our clients. I develop reports, and conduct education/employment verifications by working with HR and educational departments in different fields.
My work term with Blue Umbrella Ltd has opened me up to the compliance and due diligence industry. Understanding the inner workings and operations of the business cycle in regulatory compliance services allowed me to see how psychology and management is manifested in a workplace, and most importantly in what ways I could fit in. The fast-paced and results-oriented environment has undoubtedly led me to develop highly valuable skills. However, what I have most enjoyed from the experience, is all the learning that happens “outside of my everyday tasks”. The guidance and interactions with my supervisor and co-workers have contributed to my personal development, from building professionalism, career development and taking initiatives. In a bigger picture, my experience pushes me to reflect on my career milestones, which would help me to streamline future opportunities better.
My favourite part about Hong Kong it that it is a cosmopolitan city with world-class business infrastructure. The city has services and structures that allow international residents like me to feel like a home from home, while still maintaining its own distinct culture and identity. It’s also amazing understanding and experiencing one of the most advance business infrastructures in the world, especially how it influences business operations.
