Assoc. Professor Hugh Davies in the School of Environmental Health works on occupational health issues in Bangladesh.

Working with Bangladeshi agencies and the World Health organization, Prof. Davies has recently undertaken two pilot research projects, one examining the feasibility of using household surveys to measure occupational injury rates and another investigating chronic lung health among workers in one of the world’s most hazardous jobs – ship breaking. Reports on both projects are currently under review by scientific journals. In the long term, Prof. Davies hopes to build ties between UBC and institutions in Bangladesh such as the National Institute for Social and Preventive Medicine and the Center for Injury Prevention and Research to help in building occupational health and safety research and education infrastructure in Bangladesh.
Others working with Prof. Davies are Dr Hasanat Alamgir (now at University of Texas), Prof Tim Takaro (SFU), Prof Paul Demers (Ontario Occupational Cancer Research Center) and UBC MSc student Midori Courtice, who is now doing her PhD at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and who blogged her field experience.
